Losing Leading Wide Receiver Allen Robinson a Big Blow To Banged-Up Jacksonville Jaguars

Injuries haven’t been kind to the Jacksonville Jaguars this season. Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley announced on Tuesday that rookie wide receiver Allen Robinson has been lost for the season with a stress fracture in his right foot. Losing Robinson, who leads the Jaguars with 48 receptions for 548 yards and two touchdowns, is a severe blow to a young team that needs playing time as a unit to develop toward next season.

A second-round pick, Robinson hauled in five passes, including a two-point conversion, for 60 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys in London. Robinson has developed good chemistry with quarterback Blake Bortles and the combination figured to get even better as the season progressed. Robinson has been targeted a team-high 81 times and was often Bortles’ go-to receiver on third downs.

Robinson’s injury is the latest blow to a promising receiving corps that has suffered its share of setbacks this season. With Robinson relegated to the sideline, rookies Marqise Lee, who also missed time this year due to injury, and Allen Hurns will have more opportunities to step up and improve their games in his absence. Cecil Shorts III can also expect to shoulder an increased workload in the coming weeks. Robinson, who is expected to make a quick recovery and be ready for OTAs, enjoyed a productive rookie season and has plenty of film to evaluate to work on his game looking ahead to next season.

Looking beyond the dismal 1-9 record and Sunday’s flat performance against the Cowboys, it’s not difficult to notice the week-to-week improvement in the Jaguars. Robinson was a key part of the offense’s development, and he will be missed as the Jaguars play out the string in the final six weeks of the season and get longer looks at Lee and Hurns.
