Playoff hopefuls duel as the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills square off for the second time this year in what has become the most important game of each team’s season on Thursday night. In the first meeting between the teams, Buffalo dominated the Dolphins from start to finish, winning 29-10, and extended the Bills’ winning streak in the series to three.
The Dolphins lost a heartbreaker on Sunday and have the short week coming at the worst possible time. The Fins lost a physical matchup against the Detroit Lions where injury was added to insult. Bookend left tackle Branden Albert suffered a torn ACL and MCL and is out for the season, starting cornerback Cortland Finnegan has an ankle injury and likely will miss Thursday’s game, quarterback Ryan Tannehill got banged up against Detroit and running back Lamar Miller has been limited in practice so far this week with a shoulder injury. With injuries to so many stars, the Dolphins will need some of the younger guys to step up and play well in unfamiliar positions if there is to be any chance of beating this talented Bills team.
Buffalo dropped a tough game as well on Sunday after blowing a 10-point fourth quarter lead against the Kansas City Chiefs. Star receiver Sammy Watkins was hobbled in the loss, but he is looking to repeat his excellent Week 2 performance against a depleted Fins secondary. If Kyle Orton is able to take his time in the pocket and get the ball out to Watkins, it could be a long night for the Dolphins.
It isn’t all doom and gloom for Miami, however. When Tannehill has been on this season, he has played the best football of his career. Standout performances against the Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers where he looked like a Pro Bowler stand in stark contrast to the letdown against Buffalo earlier in the year. At the same time, Cameron Wake and the defensive line should have a field day against the “none too mobile” Orton.
So far this season Miami has been unable to win the close games, yet one has to imagine that trend is bound to end. This week is the week that it does in what has all the indications of being a dogfight, and the Dolphins keep hopes of a playoff berth alive.
