The San Francisco 49ers have been on a roller coaster ride for much of the 2014 season. It’s been a year filled with many ups-and-downs, and unfortunately for fans, that trend is continuing in Week 11.

Just hours after it was announced that Aldon Smith would be allowed to return from suspension, Patrick Willis was ruled out for the rest of the season. Willis has been on the shelf since Week 6 with a toe injury, and although it seemed iffy that he would return this season, any glimmer of hope has now been squashed.

Add in rumors that Navorro Bowman may not return this season and Jim Harbaugh‘s questionable status as the team’s leader — and you have quite the situation in San Francisco.

For now, the 49ers are alive at 5-4. But in the NFC, and specifically the NFC West, they’ll have to play at an extremely high level the rest of the way to make the postseason for the fourth straight year. 2014 could very well mark the end of another era for the storied franchise.
