Controlling the Clock Is Key To Oakland Raiders’ Week 11 Win

Despite the fact that the Oakland Raiders remain winless heading into Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers, I believe we could have another shootout on our hands the way we did back in Week 6 when the Chargers needed an interceptions to seal a three-point win. If the Raiders are going to have any shot at defeating the Chargers this week, they must control the game clock.

When looking back at the previous meeting between these teams earlier in the season, the Raiders gave the Chargers a heck of a fight. Rookie quarterback Derek Carr threw for 282 yards, four touchdowns and a last-minute interception that gave San Diego the win. The Raiders had the ball for just under 23 minutes and the Chargers had it for just over 37 minutes.

While Carr played great,  the Raiders must protect him and not let him get into another shootout with Philip Rivers because the odds are right now that he will not win a duel with one of the NFL‘s top quarterbacks. Oakland’s offense is averaging 16 points over game, while San Diego is averaging 22 a game. The other thing to remember is that when the Chargers’ offense is hot, they’re very difficult to slow down.

The Raiders need to move the ball on the ground with running back Darren McFaddenas I mentioned here — and slow the game down in order to keep Rivers and the Chargers’ offense off of the field.
