Ryan Matthews had a breakout season a year ago and look poised to build on it this year. The San Diego Chargers added depth at running back with Donald Brown, but Matthews was sure to be the bell-cow in a run-oriented offense. Yet at the beginning of the season, Matthews got injured and has been unable to play ever since. The team got a couple of nice games from Branden Oliver, but have not been able to run the ball consistently, averaging barely over 80 yards a game.

Part of the problem is the offensive line, but blame also falls on the running backs. With Matthews’ return, the team should get a huge boost, as no one on the roster has his size and explosiveness. When healthy, he can do it all, from running inside to catching the ball out of the backfield. He gives Philip Rivers another option to work with, and defenses must always account for him.

The Oakland Raiders do not have a strong run defense, and the Chargers will want to try and build early confidence for their offense. They are at their best when they are able to sustain long drives with short passes and running the ball. This helps to open up their offense for the big play and allows Rivers to control the game.

The Chargers need Matthews to have a big game as well as a strong finish to the season. He has not played since Week 2 and will be ready to get back on the field. The team may have a touch limit for him, but do not be surprised to see him get at least 10 carries and a couple looks in the passing game. That is all he needs to have a strong impact on the outcome of the game, as he should give the team a much needed boost.
