Not many Detroit Lions demand the attention of the national media quite like Ndamukong Suh. He has had his ups and downs while in a Lions uniform, but that does not take away from the fact that he is one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. Suh has had problems with his behavior on the field, and that has put his team in bad situations in the past.
Early in 2014, before the season even started, the national media put its focus on Suh and the status of his contract with the Lions. Before the 2014 NFL Draft, it was speculated by some that the Lions could ship Suh to stockpile draft picks. That move never happened. Shortly thereafter, the national media speculated that Suh told people close to him that he wanted to play in New York — a rumor that is still gaining momentum today. According to Suh, that never happened, either. Once again the trade deadline brought up idle speculation of Suh being on the move. Again, that theory was shot down as the Lions stood their ground at the trade deadline.
It seemed like the entire first nine weeks of the 2014 season, one media source or another was talking about where Suh will be playing football next season. The entire time the media was feeding off of rumors that Suh was leaving Detroit, the Lions’ front office stood firm in their belief that Suh would remain a Lion.
Early this week, reports finally started to surface that made a lot more sense for the Lions. Stephen A. Smith stated on ESPN’s First Take that he has heard from multiple sources that “Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are willing to re-structure” their contracts in order to make sure that Suh stays put in Detroit.
The fact is, when a polarizing player such as Suh is in the final year of their contract, the media is going to make a story out of it as often as they can. Nobody knows what Suh is thinking but Suh, and he has never said anything about leaving Detroit himself. Until Suh decides to sign with another NFL team, the Lions will always be the front-runners to land him. Why? Because history says he stays.
