NFL Seattle Seahawks

Can Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson Overcome His Recent Struggles Against The Kansas City Chiefs?

Russell Wilson got off to an MVP-caliber start, but the last three weeks have been some of his worst football in his young professional career. In that span, Wilson passed for a lowly 550 yards that saw a single touchdown throw against three interceptions (yuck). The good, of course, was the 107 yards rushing that included a touchdown last week against the New York Giants.

To put it mildly, Wilson has been off his game, and frankly, he is the only person holding the Seattle Seahawks back from performing at a dominant level right now. I understand Wilson has had to deal with injuries to his offensive line, and that he has been without the ultra-reliable tight end Zach Miller, who is now out for the season. I also realize that weather has been a factor, but that’s football, and those excuses are as lame as it gets.

You want to blame his receivers because this group doesn’t have a Calvin Johnson or an Antonio Brown? Fine, but Tom Brady has been in that same position how many times now? Wilson has said that he is determined to become greater than Brady, so he should be able to deal without a super stud No. 1 receiver, right?

If you still want to make excuses for the Seahawks’ star quarterback, then go ahead, but realize Wilson has acknowledged his shortcomings (no pun intended) as well.

“Well I think my accuracy has been a little bit off for whatever reason, but I just keep believing in myself,” said Wilson to John Herald. Well, more like it has been a lot off, but that is something that can certainly be corrected.

The great one’s always acknowledge their mistakes, and then they do whatever it takes to correct them. There is a reason Jay Cutler is who he is, and Aaron Rodgers is who he is.

Make no mistake about it, Wilson is great. No one is a bigger Wilson supporter than I am — I believe in him 100 percent. I also realize that he has been struggling mightily, but I have complete confidence in him to turn it around.

Hopefully that turnaround comes against the Hawks’ Week 11 matchup tomorrow against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The task will not be easy, as the Chiefs have allowed an NFL best 1,848 yards through the air this season. But hey, nothing has come easy for the Hawks this year, so should you really expect anything else?

Wilson will not be alone in his battle against Kansas City, however. While the Chiefs’ defense against the pass is spectacular, their defense against the run is sub-par. They have given up 1,040 rushing yards, but surprisingly have not given up a rushing touchdown all season. While they have been gashed, they have held strong when it matters the most. That said, they also haven’t faced a back quite like Marshawn Lynch. The San Francisco 49ersFrank Gore is the closest type to Beast Mode that they have faced (Chris Ivory still wasn’t seeing a high volume of carries when they faced the New York Jets), and he managed to gash the Chiefs for 107 yards rushing on 18 carries, but he failed to find the end zone. It will be a lot of fun to see what Lynch can do.

The Seahawks’ defense is also rolling, despite missing some key players to injury. They have looked like the NFL’s best defense once again as of late. It is scary to think what they could do once they get some guys back — most notably inside linebacker Bobby Wagner.

It will be a battle at Arrowhead, but the victor could ultimately be decided by Wilson’s performance. Will Wilson continue to struggle, or will he return to the MVP level that we saw through the first six weeks of the season?

Great players rise up to the challenge when their team needs them the most. For Seattle, tomorrow lies its biggest challenge of the season thus far, and I believe Wilson will come through in full force.
