Whether it’s somewhat of a Super Bowl hangover or the toughness of the NFC this year, it’s clear that the Seattle Seahawks are not where they had hoped to be 10 games in this year’s NFL season. Last year’s champions, who were nearly unanimous preseason favorites to not just make the Super Bowl out of the NFC once again, but to also repeat as champions, are in danger of possibly missing the playoffs with six games remaining in the regular season.
This year’s NFC West is one of the toughest and most competitive divisions in football, and the 6-4 Seahawks are a long shot to win the West. The Arizona Cardinals (9-1), barring a monumental collapse, will win this division, leaving Seattle in a battle for one of two NFC wild Card playoff spots. Earning such a bid won’t be easy, however, as the rest of the NFC is in a tight race that could come down to the wire.
Other than the NFC West, every NFC division is up for grabs at this point in the season. Starting with the NFC East, it’s clear that either the Dallas Cowboys or the Philadelphia Eagles will bring home that division. With both teams sitting at 7-3, it’s also very possible that with one team winning the division, the other will claim a wild card spot. The same can be said for the NFC North with the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions, who are also deadlocked at 7-3.
There’s no way an NFC South team will get a wild card spot. The division is led by the Atlanta Falcons (4-6), and the poor play of this division will mean that the two NFC wild cards will come from the remaining three divisions. The NFC West, which will go to the Cardinals, will likely come down to Seattle and the San Francisco 49ers battling for a wild card spot.
Both teams are tied with a 6-4 record, putting them each in the playoff hunt, yet they’ll each have to finish out the remainder of their schedules without many blemishes.
The Seahawks have their work cut out for them with the remaining six games of the season. Of those, five are divisional games, with two coming against both the Cardinals and 49ers each, and one against the stingy St. Louis Rams. Their other game on the schedule is against Philadelphia, a team that has been somewhat inconsistent but can compete with most teams in the NFL.
Also, three of those six games are on the road. Seattle is 2-2 on the road this season and 11-10 on the road in its last three seasons. Meanwhile, it is 19-2 at home in its last three seasons, and those two losses came this year. Simply stated, this is a different team on the road than at home.
This season is far from being over for the Seahawks. However, if they were to lose three or more of their next six games, they may be on the outside looking in when the season reaches its conclusion.
