The San Diego Chargers barely escaped with a victory in Week 11, and now will look ahead to their matchup with the St. Louis Rams, who are coming off of a big win. The Chargers have not been as sharp as they were to start the season, and are currently on the outside looking in of the playoffs despite having a winning record. They face another must-win game as their schedule will continue to get tougher down the stretch. One player who has not been as dominant is Philip Rivers, who needs to have a big game if the Chargers are to be successful.
Rivers started off the season looking like an MVP candidate, posting huge numbers along with dominant performances. He has since cooled off, and has been unable to regain his form despite a recent bye week. One of the problems is that he has been out of sync with his receivers, and his frustration is obvious. During the last game, he was seen having multiple conversations with Keenan Allen, and neither player seemed very happy.
The Chargers need Rivers to step up his play and be the leader of the team. They have a lot of tough games coming up, and will need to go back to controlling the clock on offense. Part of the reason they were so successful early in the year is that they were able to convert the ball on third down and sustain long drives, giving their defense plenty of rest. They are starting to return healthy players to the lineup, so there is no excuse as to why they are not producing.
The Rams have a tough defense, and will look to get after Rivers early. He must be able to read the defense and make the proper adjustments at the line. The Rams have shown that they can contain a top quarterback, so Rivers will have to be ready to play from the start. If he is able to put together a strong game, then the team will have a good chance to win.
