On Thursday Night Football this week, the winless Oakland Raiders (0-10) are set to make their national TV debut against AFC West rival Kansas City Chiefs (7-3). This is the first matchup between them this season, and you can always expect a physical one when it comes to these two squads. With the Raiders officially out of playoff contention, the Chiefs have an opportunity to grab sole position of first place in the division, so they won’t hold anything back.
Obviously, the Chiefs are the heavily favored team in this battle as they’re coming off a huge 24-20 win over the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. They are also on a five-game winning streak, and a big part of that has come from the impressive play from quarterback Alex Smith. His rating is over 92 percent this season, and he’s doing a good job utilizing his receivers. He’s approaching the 2,000 yard mark for this season, so expect him to pick the Raiders’ defense apart in this contest.
Chiefs’ running back Jamaal Charles isn’t having the season everyone had in mind, but he will be a force on the ground come Thursday. Charles did damage to the Seahawks as he rushed for two touchdowns and 159 yards. The Raiders are ranked sixth in allowing rushing yards this season, so even though Charles won’t get as much rest, he’ll have a field day on a defense that’s in shambles.
The Raiders, on the other hand, don’t have any rhythm on both sides of the ball and it doesn’t look like they’ll find it this Thursday. Their defense is all over the place, and it was evident in their 13-6 loss against the San Diego Chargers. Even though they don’t have a win, they’ve lost by a touchdown or less five times against competitive teams. They have no threat on the ground with Darren McFadden and an aging Maurice Jones-Drew, so once again, all the pressure will be on rookie Derek Carr.
With the way both teams are playing, the Chiefs are the favorites by a mile. While it might not be the most exciting Thursday Night matchup this season, it’s always an intense fight with these rivals. It will be a real shock if the Raiders do knock off the Chiefs, but it looks like Oakland will continue its horrific losing streak.
Final score prediction: Chiefs 28, Raiders 10
