2015 NFL Draft: Rams’ Way Too Early 7-Round Mock

For a team that entered the past two drafts loaded for bear with multiple first-round selections, the St. Louis Rams will actually come into the 2015 NFL Draft this April tied for the least total picks with just five. Some of the young talent they have stockpiled courtesy of the RG3 deal from a few years back is developing nicely, but they could still use some help in a few crucial areas. Here is a way-too-early mock draft for the Rams.

If the season ended today, the Rams would hold the No. 12 overall pick. That probably wouldn’t be high enough to get them the top-rated quarterback on the board, but they could choose to fill a different need if that is the case. After an upside offensive line pick a year ago in Greg Robinson, the Rams should go the safe route with Brandon Scherff this year. Short arms could force him inside to guard where St. Louis needs plenty of help.

Round 2 -- Sean Mannion, QB, Oregon State

Call me crazy, but I think Sean Mannion has a higher ceiling than any quarterback in this draft class. He’s on pace for a career-low completion percentage as a senior at Oregon State, but he’s already eclipsed his career high in times sacked in 2014. Four years experience in a pro-style offense is very appealing to a team like the Rams in need of an instant starter. At 6-foot-5, 227 pounds, Mannion has the prototypical build of a franchise QB.

Round 3 -- Stefon Diggs, WR, Maryland

With Chris Givens falling out of favor in St. Louis, an addition like Stefon Diggs to an already young and explosive receiving corps could do wonders next season. There’s no question the Rams need to give players like Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey adequate time to develop, but Diggs wouldn’t be there to take reps away from them; he would be there as a complement to help the young QB and a blossoming offense take shape.

It’s not often that draft choices can produce results prior to said selections even taking place, but that’s the case for the Rams with their fourth and sixth-round picks in 2015. Those two choices were sent to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the deadline deal for safety Mark Barron, a former No. 7 overall pick in 2012. That draft class is the gift that keeps on giving for the Rams as their secondary filled a much-needed hole with Barron’s addition.

James Laurinatis and Alec Ogletree are fixtures at linebacker for the Rams, but they need one more outside backer to complete an unstoppable trifecta. Enter Stephone Anthony, the 6-foot-2, 244-pound stud from Clemson. His skill set is reminiscent of Ogletree coming out of college, and there’s no doubt the Rams could use another multi-dimensional linebacker to patrol the second level of their defense.

Round 7 -- Kevin White, CB, TCU

Size has to be the main concern for the 5-foot-9, 175-pound Kevin White entering the NFL. Although scouts have been able to overlook physical shortcomings for certain players in recent years, it could cause White to slide a bit in the draft along with his propensity for giving up the big play. What he lacks in stature and consistency is certainly made up for with upside, however, and the Rams would be wise to add him to their group of corners.
