The Philadelphia Eagles will look to bounce back at home this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans after their crushing defeat by the Green Bay Packers. The Packers blew out the Eagles 53-20 at Lambeau Field as Philadelphia struggled on offense, defense, and special teams.
The good news is that the Eagles will face the Titans at home, where they have won nine straight games and are 5-0, whereas the Titans are just 1-4 on the road this season. While this certainly seems like the perfect game for Philadelphia to get an easy win at home, the Titans should not be taken lightly.
The Titans have the NFL’s ninth-best pass defense and are coming off a tough loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers. QB Zach Mettenberger showed that despite the loss, that he is capable of leading the Tennessee offense.
Against the Titans defense, the x-factor will be rookie wide receiver Jordan Matthews, who over the last three games has 285 yards and four touchdowns on just 15 receptions. Matthews and Jeremy Maclin are emerging as one of the best receiving duos in the NFL, as teams now have to respect Matthews’ ability whilst simultaneously trying to shut down Maclin who is having himself a Pro-Bowl caliber season.
Matthews has clearly become the favorite target of QB Mark Sanchez, and defenses know it; a strong game from Matthews will result in less double teams for Maclin and the other receivers which will help to open up the passing game. If the passing game can be successful early, then it will make things much easier for running backs LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles.
Look what happened to Packers running back Eddie Lacy when Aaron Rodgers was able to carve up the Eagles secondary. The Eagles were busy focusing on stopping the deep pass from Rodgers that they left Lacy essentially wide open on numerous plays. Lacy finished the game with 69 rushing yards on just 10 carries, and had three receptions for 45 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown on a check down pass from Rodgers.
Matthews will be the key to the Eagles winning on Sunday. He is certainly talented enough to rise to the occasion, as he looks to become the first rookie receiver in Eagles history with three consecutive games of 100+ receiving yards.
