2015 NFL Draft: New England Patriots’ Way Too Early 7-Round Mock

There’s never a bad time to start looking ahead towards the NFL Draft, and with only six weeks left in the football season, now is as good a time as ever to start mocking. The Patriots have already traded around some picks and are currently sitting with seven selections to improve an already stacked roster. Here’s the first crack at a Patriots seven-round mock.

Round 1: Dante Fowler (DE Florida)

Belichick’s love for Florida players only rivals his love for Rutgers, and in an attempt to rebuild Florida’s defensive line (because the Pats already have Dominique Easley), the Patriots draft the pass rushing defensive end. Fowler can play both outside linebacker in a 3-4 and a down rusher in 4-3, and he would spell Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich, giving them a much-needed break.

Round 2: Tevin Coleman (RB Indiana)

While I’d love the Patriots to draft a wide receiver here, it seems that doesn’t pan out all that well (looking at you Aaron Dobson, Chad Jackson), so instead the Patriots instead fill a much-needed spot at running back. Coleman adds huge home run capability to the Patriots’ backfield, considering he has 14 carries of at least 30 yards, 11 of at least 40, eight of at least 50 and seven of at least 60.

Round 3: Marcus Peters (CB Washington)

Who knows what the Patriots plan to do with Revis, whose contract is basically up at the end of the year, but it never hurts to be safe. Peters is easily a top-15 talent, but recently the cornerback was kicked out of Washington for disciplinary reasons. If that doesn’t scream Belichick sneaky steal of the draft pick, then I don’t know what does.

Round 4: Ellis McCarthy (DL, UCLA) & Blake Bell (TE Oklahoma)

Patriots have two picks in the fourth round (one from Tampa Bay) and again benefit from having a great roster, taking risks on both McCarthy and Bell. McCarthy is a beast of a human (6-foot-5, 325 pounds) who could be the replacement to Vince Wilfork, but his weight is a problem and because of it he has knee issues. Bell is a freak athlete at tight end who would pair wonderfully with Gronk.

Round 5: Tony Lippett (WR Michigan State)

Lippett has long arms and strong hands to go along with his 6-foot-3 frame and would be a big target for Brady all over the field. Lippett doesn’t have game-changing speed, but he is a clean route-runner and is currently averaging 111.1 receiving yards a game with Michigan State. I’d be perfectly happy with that kind of production in the fifth round.

Round 7: Jeff Luc (LB Cincinnati)

Luc adds a big linebacker (6-foot-1, 256 pounds) who is an extremely sure tackler and an explosive hitter to the roster. With Jerod Mayo’s injury history and his future up in the air with the team, adding Luc as insurance would make a lot of sense, especially in the seventh round. Even if Mayo stays with the Patriots, it’s obvious the team needs linebacker depth and Luc certainly provides that.
