No one ever defeats the New England Patriots in Foxborough, and the Detroit Lions became the 15th straight road opponent to lose in Gillette Stadium. This game was never close as the Lions were thrashed 34-9. Here are five takeaways from Detroit's Week 12 loss.

In every phase of special teams, the Lions were poor in their execution. Detroit's coverage units gave up several big returns, including a touchdown that was called back by a penalty. Matt Prater made three of his four attempts, but missed from 53 yards out, and Sam Martin landed just two of his five punts inside the 20-yard line.

Despite getting several good hits on Tom Brady, the Lions failed to record a single sack against the Patriots.

Detroit's offensive line, which had been an Achilles' heel all season long, played poorly again against the Patriots. Playing without Riley Reiff and Larry Warford, Detroit gave up two sacks on the day and Matthew Stafford was constantly on his back all day.

Detroit's passing game looked out of sync early and often against the Patriots. Matthew Stafford only completed 18 of 46 passes for 264 yards and an interception. Stafford's numbers were poor, but he got little to no help from the receiving corps. Lions receivers dropped several passes, including some that were in the end zone.

Detroit's secondary, which looked good for most of the season, was finally exposed against an elite quarterback in Tom Brady. Brady completed 38 of 53 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns. Most of his damage was done in the first half as the Patriots raced out to a commanding 24-6 halftime lead. Five Patriots had five or more receptions and three receivers had more than 75 yards.
