When Mark Sanchez was cast out of the Big Apple as a washed-up quarterback for the New York Jets, not many people expected Sanchez to get a second chance with another team.
Wouldn’t those Jets fans love to have Sanchez back right about now?
While coach Rex Ryan, general manager John Idzik and the entire Jets team struggles through a terrible season, not more than an hour and a half to the southwest Sanchez is undergoing a career renaissance with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Sanchez may not be the long-term answer for the Eagles, but even if Philadelphia elects to go back to Nick Foles (which does not appear likely) it is clear Sanchez has gotten a second chance.
He’s making the most of it and proving his critics wrong.
Sanchez got a lot of help from his supporting cast in a 43-24 win over the Tennessee Titans. Although he completed just one touchdown pass to James Casey, Sanchez spread the ball around. Nine players caught at least one pass. When your offense is humming like that, it is hard for any defense to make stops. You can’t zero in on one receiver because there are others waiting in the wings.
The Eagles improved to 6-0 at Lincoln Financial Field, which will be huge if the Eagles can score a home playoff game. More importantly, the team is 8-3 overall and sharpening its credentials as a team to watch in the NFC postseason picture.
The injury to Foles could be a wild card. Ordinarily, I’m not a fan of seeing quarterbacks lose chances due to injuries. The reality, however, is this is today’s NFL. You can be hot one week and out of the lineup the next week if the backup excels in your absence.
Sanchez knows the feeling. He was drummed out of New York with boos and welcomed to Philadelphia.
Even though it may not have been with open arms at first, the Eagles fans have been graciously accepting Sanchez as of late. They love a winner, and he looks like he is one.
