The Arizona Cardinals are the best team in the NFL. With six games remaining on the schedule, they are the number one seed in the NFC. But with the Green Bay Packers gaining ground and the Dallas Cowboys not far behind, are their any other teams in the NFC that can challenge the Cardinals?
The NFC West is not what it once was. The success of the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks is lingering, but it has diminished overall from last season. The Cardinals have been the real story this season and have not lost a beat despite several changes at quarterback. Bruce Aryans is the leading candidate for coach of the year. His team comes prepared week after week and he is constantly changing the game plan. If a team is going to challenge them for the number one seed, it probably won’t come out of the West.
And while it probably won’t come out of the West, it is mathematically impossible to come out of the NFC South. Currently the Atlanta Falcons lead the division at 4-7. All four of their victories have occurred against divisional rivals. The Falcons will hope to continue their fortune as the season progresses, but oddly this division is still up for grabs.
Two teams have a chance to challenge the Cardinals in the NFC East. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Cowboys have had success, both at 7-3, and have yet to play each other twice this season. The conversations within both teams are similar: Do they have the quarterbacks with an ability to win them playoff games?
Eagles quarterback Nick Foles is out with a broken collarbone and it is up to Mark Sanchez to keep the team going. He’s played well so far, but there is a lot at stake. As for the Cowboys, it’s all about Tony Romo‘s back holding up. He looked better in London and will be coming off a bye. Even though both teams have done well so far, they don’t look nearly as dominate as they did roughly a month ago. The NFC East is tight, but it’s not as strong as it once was.
The best division in the NFC is the NFC North. The Green Bay Packers over the past two weeks have trounced their opponents. They truly look like the team to beat. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been masterful and no team wants to come to Lambeau. The Detroit Lions keep finding ways to win as well, as Matt Stafford has been fantastic in the fourth quarter this season. The return of Calvin Johnson will only assist to their prowess. The Week 17 matchup between these two teams has a chance to be must-see football.
Drew Stanton has filled in nicely for Arizona and the Cardinals deserve a lot of credit, but they are definitely weaker without Carson Palmer. The Packers are on the rise and many NFL experts are insinuating that this is their year. Any fan that’s watched the Packers play the past two weeks is thinking one thing: Watch out for the Pack.
