Last night New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. blew up the world with his unbelievable touchdown catch.
Chris Collinsworths’ words at that exact moment were, “that is greatest catch I have ever seen.” In the middle of being illegally pass interfered, Beckham hauled in an unbelievable pass by Eli Manning and only used three fingers. Before last nights game, critics claimed that the odds for Beckham to win offensive rookie of the year were slim. One can only imagine how bad those critics wish they could take that back.
Beckham has had well over 100 receiving yards in three of his last four games including an additional two touchdowns yesterday. If Beckham keeps up the pace, he will have a thousand yards on the season. The last rookie wide receiver to have a thousand yard season was A.J. Green, so Beckham would be in good company.
The fact that Beckham didn’t play his first four games of the season should be taken into consideration for the award. If Beckham played, he would be well ahead of fellow candidates Kelvin Benjamin and Sammy Watkins. Beckham clearly has made more of an impact with the Giants than the other two candidates with their own respective teams.
Without Beckham there is no Giants offense. He is the most targeted and is the only true playmaker on their team.
Beckham is normally double covered by opposing defenses, leaving other Giants open to make big plays. Take Beckham out of the equation and opposing defenses have more of a chance of shutting the Giants’ offense out. No other Giant is worthy of being double covered, so the opposing defense would be content with more of a single man coverage. This would make it much more difficult for the Giants to produce on offense.
Since Beckham means so much to the Giants he should be the front-runner for Rookie of the Year. The fact that the catch Beckham made is one of the greatest of all time is instant proof of that. Benjamin and Watkins are going to have to jump through hoops to look better than Beckham.
