New York Jets Should Start Geno Smith For Remainder of the Season

The New York Jets’ season has been over for many weeks, and Week 12 against the Buffalo Bills was another embarrassing loss for New York. It’s becoming very clear that a lot of change will likely be occurring in the offseason in terms of personnel, coaching and in front office. New York still has five games to play, and these games should be used to see what players the Jets may want to hold on to for upcoming seasons, and that has to start with making it 100 percent certain that Geno Smith is not the QB for the Jets.

Last season the Jets went 8-8 with Smith as the starter, but in this one Smith only was able to win one game against the Oakland Raiders. After being benched for Michael Vick, one thing that became very apparent for the Jets was that not only was the QB position a major issue, but that the whole team in general is a mess.

In the Jets’ Week 12 loss to the Bills, Vick was awful. He went 7-of-19 in the game for just 76 yards with one interception that easily could have been three or four if it wasn’t for a few drops by Bills defenders.

Vick was brought in to spark the Jets’ offense but has failed miserably, and it was rather shocking that he wasn’t benched earlier against the Bills for Smith. Coming in for Vick, Smith played pretty well against a relaxed Bills defense. Smith finished 10-for-12 in the game for 89 yards. Smith has not been given much to work with in his first two seasons with the Jets, and after seeing how poorly Vick has played too, it does take some of the blame away from Smith for this season’s struggles.

With the Jets’ season long over, they might as well start Smith and make sure that he is not their QB moving forward as they head into the draft. With wins and losses meaning nothing to the Jets now, Smith should be the QB moving forward. The front office and coaching staff may not be there next season, but they need to see whether or not Smith is still developing or if he is a dud of a draft pick.
