Why Football is the Best Part of Thanksgiving
There are a lot of reasons to love Thanksgiving: Spending time with your family, getting the day off of work, turkey with all of the fixings, apple pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, and giving thanks for everything good in your life. But while those reasons are all great, there’s really one reason why Thanksgiving is the best holiday of the year. We’re pretty sure you know what it is: Football.
Let us explain why football makes Thanksgiving great:
1. It’s one day of the year when football is played on all levels
Whether you want to watch at the high school, college, or professional level, there’s a game (or 50) for you. Rival high schools face off in Turkey Bowls across the country while TCU will play Texas and LSU will try to beat Texas A&M. And of course, you can get NFL tickets for games starting at 12:30 p.m. ET and going until almost midnight. Why don’t you have your TCU tickets yet?
2. There are three NFL games
Thanksgiving football has been a tradition in the NFL since the 1920s and fans have been getting Detroit Lions tickets and Dallas Cowboys tickets for the fourth Thursday of November since 1934 and 1966 respectively. Still, two games just never felt like enough as it meant there were a few hours of turkey coma where, especially for people on the west coast, there was a noticeable lack of, well, football. Luckily, the NFL came to its senses and, ever since 2006, there have been three back-to-back games, which is really how it always should have been.
3. It gives you a reason to bond with Uncle Bob
You and Uncle Bob don’t see eye to eye on much, but if there’s one thing you can agree on, it’s how much you love (or hate) the Bears/Lions/Eagles/Cowboys/Seahawks/49ers. You swap your favorite NFL stories and game moments. Without football, what would you and those relatives you only see a few times of year talk about? The stock market? World peace? ….? Exactly. Football gives everyone a reason to come together and root for a common good in a way that’s easy and fun. As long as you’re all cheering on the same team, that is.
4. You can go to a game and skip Thanksgiving altogether
Sure, Thanksgiving is fun, but it’s also a lot of hard work. Grocery lists, shopping, food prep, cooking… And then after all of that, you still have to do the dishes and clean the kitchen. Why not skip it this year and head to the stadium instead? With three huge rivalry games (act fast, because there are still great Bears at Lions tickets, Eagles at Cowboys tickets, and Seahawks at 49ers tickets left!), you’re pretty much guaranteed an intense matchup. And someone will totally save you a piece of pie for later.
5. Playing football as a family
The turkey’s in the oven and there’s a little time between NFL games. This is the perfect opportunity to get the entire family out of the house for a quick game of touch football. All families should have an annual Turkey Bowl where everyone plays, regardless of skill, age, or gender. It’s a fun way to bond, and be honest, you could stand to burn a few calories. Plus, just think about how good it will feel to dive past Uncle Bob for the game-winning touchdown.
