New York Jets QB Carousel Continues With Geno Smith Back As Starter

The laughing stock that is the New York Jets continues with head coach Rex Ryan giving quarterback Geno Smith the starting job back over veteran Michael Vick.

It is a move that is quite surprising considering Vick has at least given the Jets some life on offense, even if it has been met with only one win and several embarrassing losses.

Apparently, the dismantling at the hands of the Buffalo Bills on Monday night was too much to handle for some people within the organization. Despite Ryan leaning towards keeping Vick in the starting lineup, it is rumored that clueless general manager John Idzik pressured the coach to start the young man he drafted.

Smith was benched in a Week 8 loss to the Bills after throwing three interceptions. Vick came in for relief and tossed an interception as well. Still, the Jets decided to stick with him to see if he could lead the team in a positive direction. Vick did not disappoint as he threw three touchdowns to zero interceptions against the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers. It was against the Steelers that he shined the brightest and led the team to a victory.

Unfortunately, Vick’s lackluster performance against the Bills in Week 12 forced management to get involved. He completed only 36.8 percent of his 19 pass attempts for 76 yards and one interception. His 4.2 QBR and 27.5 passer rating is all the evidence needed to know how poorly he performed.

Still, what in the world has Smith done this season that gives the Jets confidence he can do any better? He has seven touchdowns to 10 interceptions, including two multi-interception games. The players clearly do not respond with him under center, although in all fairness, the team has failed to respond in general this season.

Despite giving the offense a much-needed spark, Vick’s time as the starter was short lived. As an unbiased onlooker, I cannot imagine this is the right decision for the Jets. I understand Smith is still the future of the team, which is hilarious. But, one has to wonder what could have been if Vick was the starter right of the gate this season.
