It is going to be a fun game to watch when the Denver Broncos go head-to-head against their AFC West rival Kansas City Chiefs. Peyton Manning and company have worked their way to a solid 8-3 record, but they still have a long way to go in order to get back to the Super Bowl. The Chiefs, on the other hand, are sitting at 7-4 and have been playing some of their best football of late before their shocking loss to the Oakland Raiders. Something has to give when these two teams face on on Sunday night in a game that can change the tides atop the AFC West.
This is going to be the classic football cliche of a great offense against a great defense. The Chiefs’ rush defense was exposed last week against the Raiders as they gave up 179 yards rushing. That number is well above their 129.4 average for the season, and it is an area where they already rank low (25th) compared to the rest of the league. Luckily, the Chiefs have the No. 1 pass defense, but they will be tested against the great Manning and the Broncos’ flight of great receivers (No. 2 passing offense). Things will be even more difficult for the Chiefs’ defense this week, as they will be without their star safety Eric Berry who is scheduled to miss the rest of the season with possible lymphoma.
In order for the Chiefs to come away with a win in this game, they must rely on Jamaal Charles. Despite a very good Broncos’ run defense (N0. 2 in the league), Charles must see 25-30 touches in the game. The Chiefs must keep Manning on the sideline, the ball in Charles’ hands and the clock ticking. Time of possession is crucial against the Broncos, because Manning can score in the blink of an eye and the Chiefs’ offense will not be able to match if this game turns into a shootout.
If the Chiefs can control the clock and Charles can find some running lanes, then they have a shot at winning this game. It does help that the Chiefs get to play this game at home as they are a great home team in front of one of the loudest crowds in the NFL. I’m predicting a low-scoring affair between these two teams despite the Broncos’ offense being what they are.
Prediction: Broncos 24, Chiefs 17
