Jacksonville Jaguars Have Gotten Nothing From Toby Gerhart

Toby Gerhart has given the Jacksonville Jaguars absolutely nothing on the ground this season, despite the fact that he was given a three-year, $10.5 million contract as a free agent this past offseason after starting his career with the Minnesota Vikings.

It was obvious at the beginning of the season that Jacksonville wanted to pound the ball with Gerhart to take pressure off quarterback Chad Henne, who was the starter at the time. But it didn’t work since he hasn’t rushed for more than 42 yards in a single game this season.

Then Gerhart ended up missing a couple of games with a foot injury, which prompted the Jaguars and head coach Gus Bradley to give former Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson some carries. Well since then, Gerhart hasn’t regained his starting job after Robinson took off and earned the Jags’ starting running back position. He has a chance to gain over 1,000 yards this season, while Gerhart sits on the bench and comes in every now and then.

Pro Football Focus has Gerhart’s rushing grade at -5.9 and an overall rating of -5.7. He’s PFF’s 43rd ranked running back overall. He’s only averaging 2.9 yards per carry this season.

It’s really a shame the Jaguars are paying Gerhart an average of $3.5 million per season when he’s clearly not producing. Even rookie Storm Johnson is averaging 3.2 yards per carry this season after getting some touches earlier in the season.

In the end, you really have to wonder if the Jaguars will decide to cut their losses and get rid of Gerhart after the season.
