Dallas Cowboys Need Terrance Williams To Step Up

In his first six games of the 2014 season, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrance Williams totaled 320 yards through the air and found the end zone five times. However, over the last six games Williams has pulled a “Houdini Act” in the Dallas offense, as the No. 2 wideout has only caught over two balls just once in that span and hasn’t found pay dirt since Week 5.

If the Cowboys have any hope of ending their four-year long playoff drought, Williams must step up and take some of the pressure off of Dez Bryant. It’s quite concerning that a second-year player who showed so much promise early on the season has regressed in his development at a critical turning point.

Head coach Jason Garrett always preaches about players taking advantage of opportunities, and Williams hasn’t done so. Every week, No. 83 faces man-to-man coverage as defenses stack the box to stop DeMarco Murray or double cover Bryant. As an every down wide receiver in the NFL, you must be able to beat one on one matchups for your quarterback. It makes third downs easier to convert and opens everything for your offense.

Williams fractured his index finger against the New York Giants two weeks ago and wore a splint to protect it in the Thanksgiving loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but that’s no excuse for his poor play. Wide receivers play with broken fingers all the time and are still effective.

What’s perhaps even more concerning is the lack of effort he put on display last week. Williams completely gave up on a route that resulted in a Tony Romo interception. Although it was a bad pass, Williams at the very least could have tried to break up the interception. Instead, he just stood there.

Fortunately, like the rest of this Cowboys team, Williams has a golden opportunity to write a new script for the month of December and forget about his November woes. Let’s see if he can capitalize.
