New Orleans Saints’ Running Game Could Make Them Tough To Beat Down The Stretch
The New Orleans Saints needed a win. Going on the road to play a tough Pittsburgh Steelers team, who was coming off a bye, the Saints got just that. In the NFC South, if you get a win, you’re more than likely to be near the top of the standings. That’s how bad the division is. Although they’re having a subpar season at 5-7, the Saints got that much closer to the playoffs.
Although the Saints have had some injuries this year, this game is a huge momentum-booster for a team that could get very hot in the coming weeks. The weapons are there on offense for this team to be tough in the postseason. Against the Steelers, the offense got the job done and they did it with a balanced attack, which is something they haven’t been able to accomplish in years.
Drew Brees was quite surgical in this game, completing 19 passes of 27 attempts for over 250 yards and five touchdowns. However, the ground game was just as good. Mark Ingram carried the football 23 times for 122 yards. With a competent running game, the pressure will get taken off Brees, and that’s huge for this offense as a whole.
Jimmy Graham hasn’t been the same in 2014 and now with Brandin Cooks on IR, the Saints are missing a few key pieces. However, if the running game continues their success, it will be hard to stop this offense. If defenses need to load the box to stop Ingram and Pierre Thomas, Brees will have his way with opposing secondaries.
It is basically a four-game season now for the Saints, and if they get it done on offense, there is no reason why this team won’t make the playoffs.
