J.J. Watt Is NFL MVP Front-Runner Heading Into Week 14

Back in Week 7, DeMarco Murray was running his way into the history books and straight to the MVP trophy. Since then, Murray hasn’t so much cooled off as he’s failed to continue going toe to toe with what can only be described as the human Star Destroyer.

I love it when non-quarterbacks win the MVP trophy. I love it even more when a defensive player wins the MVP trophy. Granted, I’ve never experienced a defensive player winning since the last one to win was Laurence Taylor back in 1986. There have only been two defensive players to ever win MVP (Taylor and Alan Page) but this year, I will see a defensive player win MVP, because that is just how good J.J. Watt is.

Turn on any Houston Texans game and you’re assured of two things: the quarterback play will be subpar and Watt will do something amazing.

Last Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, Watt had three tackles, two sacks, one tackle for a loss, a forced fumble which he recovered and almost returned for a touchdown, and six QB hits. That to me sounds like domination. On the season, Watt has 11.5 sacks, good for fifth in the league, 54 tackles, three forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and a mind-blowing 36 quarterback hits, which is 13 more than that of the next highest player, Von Miller.

This is all not including his five touchdowns on the season, which of course breaks an NFL record.

He is the first defensive lineman since 1944 to have five touchdowns in a season. Watt is the first player with three offensive and two defensive touchdowns since 1948 regardless of position. Sunday’s game was Watt’s second game in the past three weeks with a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a receiving touchdown, something no player has done in the last five seasons.

The NFL is witnesses history right now. Watt is playing at a level no one could believe. I keep thinking that at a certain point Watt will hit his ceiling and will have done as much as he can, but we have yet to see that point and honestly, it may never come. He is just that good. Watt will keep single-handedly destroying offenses and winning games for the Texans. If the Texans are able to sneak into the playoffs, Watt has to be a shoo-in for the MVP.

Even without a playoff trip, Watt is giving us a season that we have never seen before. The only way to award that is with the MVP trophy. Even if he doesn’t get it, he’ll probably sack fumble the player who wins and recover the fumble and run that back for a touchdown. Don’t put it past him.
