Chicago Bears Present Real Challenge To the Dallas Cowboys
Despite their record, the Chicago Bears are a team that can present a very real challenge for the desperate Dallas Cowboys who are going on the road for a much-needed win this Thursday night against an underachieving team. We all know the famous Bill Parcells saying of “you are what your record says you are,” but we also know that some teams can have a world of talent at their disposal and simply underperform for whatever reason. And I believe that this is the perfect description of the 2014 Bears team that we will all see featured on the NFL Network tomorrow night.
It’s just like a frustrated Brandon Marshall pointed out in his postgame press conference after yet another inexplicable loss that featured an inept offense; this team has two Pro Bowl receivers in Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, a Pro Bowl caliber tight end in Martellus Bennett, a Pro Bowl running back in Matt Forte and a decent offensive line. The only player who doesn’t seem to be carrying their weight on this team is the inconsistent Jay Cutler. But perhaps I shouldn’t call him inconsistent, as he consistently seems to turn the ball over with regularity in every game they play. If you look at his turnover numbers each season they are quite staggering; he is averaging somewhere around 20 combined turnovers a year.
But if you watch him play, he has the talent to put it all together. He has a rocket for an arm and the prototypical size you want for a quarterback, and this is what makes him scary. If Cutler ever does figure it out, this offense can become almost unstoppable. He has two receivers in Marshall and Jeffrey who come in at 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-3, respectively, and a 6-foot-6 tight end in Bennett. And if you do decide to commit to stopping their potent passing attack down the field, Cutler can either check it down or hand it off to the home run threat in Forte.
Given the fact that Dallas’ defense is finally starting to show glimpses of still being last year’s awful unit, this could be a long day for a team that is trying to exorcise its December demons of the past. The Cowboys better hope the bad Cutler continues to show up; otherwise they could be staring at another 8-8 season.
