Dallas Cowboys Facing Must-Win Game vs. Chicago Bears

The Dallas Cowboys are 8-4 and right in the thick of the NFC playoff race. Dallas could still win the NFC East and with a little help they could even end up being the No. 1 seed in the NFC. So, with all of their goals still obtainable, why is Thursday night’s game in Chicago a must-win for Dallas?

First of all, Dallas is the superior team. The Chicago Bears come into the game at 5-7 with virtually no chance at making the playoffs. Their defense is atrocious, giving up an average of 376 yards and 28 points per game. On offense, Jay Cutler has been a turnover machine with 24 interceptions and 11 fumbles. Dallas has been the better team all season long, and they must be the better team on Thursday night. But there is a bigger reason why Dallas must win this game and it has to do with history.

Dallas has entered the month of December with a winning record in the past, but they have rarely left December with one. In 2011, Dallas entered the final month with a 7-4 record, but lost four of their final five games to finish 8-8. In 2013, Dallas was 7-5 when the December began but once again ended the season 8-8.

The Cowboys’ season is at a crossroads, and the result of Thursday’s game will determine where they end up. If they win it will propel them down the path to their first playoff berth since 2009. However, if Dallas loses, they will find themselves on that all too familiar path of a December debacle that dead ends with yet another disappointing 8-8 season.
