The New York Giants have nothing to look forward to but the 2015 NFL Draft. They have the most players on injured reserve in the NFL, a glaring head coaching issue and possibly a quarterback issue.

Eli Manning has shown clear improvement from last season, and he deserves to be a Giant for the rest of his career. However, that doesn’t mean the Giants shouldn’t start to prepare for life after Manning. Next year is the final year in Manning’s contract, and the Giants will most likely want to evaluate him for an extension. To make Manning play at his best, the Giants should select a quarterback early in the 2015 draft — nothing makes an old dog step it up like some friendly competition.

Drafting a quarterback will push Manning to be better and at the same time have a nice insurance policy. Manning will play his heart out to stay with the Giants in fear of losing his job to a rookie. Once Manning is signed to his contract extension, he could groom the future heir to his throne: look at how well it worked out with Brett Farve and Aaron Rodgers, minus all the drama.

This would be the best move for the Giants in case Manning has a collapse. Critics don’t ever give him the benefit of the doubt. He is in a brand new offense for the first time in his career and has a horrible offensive line. That’s a recipe for disaster. Despite that his numbers still show clear improvement, so another year of studying the offense and Manning will come out looking like gold.

The Giants would reassure themselves by having a new quarterback on the roster. They have the future covered and will have Manning for the time being. With a new coach to thrown in, the future for the Giants will be looking bright.
