It was confirmed Sunday night that Arizona Cardinals running back Andre Ellington is done for the season after suffering numerous injuries in 2014, with the hip pointer in Week 13 being the final dagger. The only way the Cardinals will be able to stay afloat in the increasingly competitive NFC playoff race is to sign running back Ray Rice as soon as possible.

Just last week, sources within the organization told ESPN’s Ed Werder that there was zero interest in the team inking a deal with Rice, who had quite the year after physically abusing his fiancée, now wife, in an Atlantic City casino elevator. However, that could all change now that Ellington has been confirmed to be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

It is true that Rice will come with some initial baggage involving the media. That alone could be the reason why Arizona does not want to deal with him, especially as the team is pushing for a top seed in the NFC down the stretch. As much as Rice could help the team on the field, it is the distraction he could cause off the field that would make his signing far more disruptive than productive.

It is truly unfortunate that the Cardinals have been forced with difficult decisions due to injuries. However, that is life in the NFL. With an incredibly competitive remaining schedule, the organization must make intelligent football decisions that will ensure the team has the best chance to win in December. Signing Rice to be a possible threat in the backfield is an acquisition that could prove to be great.
