When Carson Palmer tore his ACL a few weeks ago, many thought the Arizona Cardinals would start to run the football more with second-year man Andre Ellington. However, last week, Ellington left the game against the Atlanta Falcons early with a hip injury. Although he was sidelined for Arizona’s Week 14 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, many thought Ellington’s injury was just for precautionary reasons.

It was determined after Arizona’s win that Ellington’s injury was more serious than originally thought. That being said, the Cardinals need a running back to step up, and that guy is Kerwynn Williams.

Many thought it would be Stepfan Taylor who would take over the starting roles in Week 14 with Ellington out. However, it was Williams who had the bulk of the carries. Williams had 19 carries for 100 yards, while Taylor had just six carries for 19 yards. All year, Taylor was a decent backup to Ellington, but when he got his chance to prove his worth, Taylor failed and ultimately gave the starting job for the rest of the year to Williams.

Although the Cardinals are now without their starting quarterback and running back, they will still likely make the playoffs considering how well they played in the beginning of the year. Knowing that the Cardinals will make the playoffs, Williams, a guy who was signed in the middle of the year after stints on multiple practice squads, will have a great opportunity to show teams around the league that he is deserving of a starting gig somewhere else.

The rookie will need to play well if the Cardinals want to not only make the playoffs, but win a few playoff games in the process.
