Three consecutive years missing the playoffs usually means a team’s head coach will be fired, especially in New York. However, the New York Giants are in a different situation with a possible future Hall of Fame coach they need to make a decision on for next year. There are many saying that it’s time for a new voice and that Tom Coughlin is too old to still be a coach in the NFL. I, on the other hand, completely disagree.

Whatever you want to say about Coughlin, it is clear at this point that the Giants are playing their hearts out for him. All of the Giants have a profound amount of respect for their head coach, and it shows by the way they have been playing the last few weeks. Yes, the Giants have lost four of the past five games, but none of those games were blowouts and the Giants could have realistically won all of them.

The Giants went toe to toe with the Seattle Seahawks one month ago and then lost heartbreakers to the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars and the 49ers right now are not very good teams, but the fact that the Giants were in close games with the Seahawks and the Cowboys shows that they still have a lot to fight for and they want Coughlin to remain their coach.

The Seahawks are once again in Super Bowl form and look like one of the favorites in the NFC. The Cowboys have been one of the best teams in the entire league this year, but somehow the Giants managed to stay in games with these teams regardless of the significant talent differential.

The fact that the Giants haven’t been able to finish games this year has more to do with a lack of talent in important spots and major injuries. Fans should recognize the fact that the Giants are still playing hard and have had a chance to win every game in recent weeks.

This past week the Giants took on the Tennessee Titans and won in blowout fashion. It is clear at this point that the Titans have thrown in the towel and aren’t playing with passion. The Giants could have just as easily done the same thing, but instead they have a coach who has motivated them to stay competitive in games they have no business being competitive in.

To the fans who think Coughlin should be fired, I would say think about what the Giants’ major problems are. They don’t have enough talent at key positions, more specifically offensive line.

Everybody would agree that the Cowboys, 49ers and Seahawks are much better, and more talented teams than the Giants, yet the Giants somehow managed to give all of those teams a tough game. That is a testament to the head coach, a guy who is still getting his message across to his team, and a guy who has his team playing just as hard as a team with playoff aspirations.
