The New York Jets have been one of the NFL’s worst teams this season, and there have been plenty of times in which it’s hard to watch the team play because of the ineptitude. Major changes are clearly coming for the Jets, and it’s safe to assume many players on the roster are going to find themselves looking for new jobs this offseason. With that said, here are five players the Jets should release this offseason.

Signed to provide a veteran pass-rushing presence, Jason Babin has really underwhelmed in New York. With just two sacks on the season, Babin is clearly declining and needs to be released.

Outside of his decent Monday night performance a few weeks ago, Chris Johnson has done nothing of note for the Jets this season. Chris Ivory is the better option, and Bilal Powell is capable of taking over Johnson’s role. The Jets need to just admit their mistake and release Johnson.

At 34 years old, Calvin Pace’s best days in the NFL are long behind him, and with the Jets entering a rebuilding phase, Pace should be released. He was a great player for most of his career, but it’s time the Jets move on from Pace.

2. Quinton Coples

A consistently underwhelming presence, Quinton Coples has proven to be a huge bust for the Jets and this should be his final season with the team. Coples has the talent to succeed in the NFL, but a change of scenery is probably best for both sides.

Speaking of draft busts, Geno Smith is another guy drafted by the Jets who didn’t pan out the way they wanted. Smith isn’t an NFL-caliber starter at this point in his career, and while it’s rare for a team to move on from a young quarterback so early on, Smith’s play doesn’t warrant another season in New York.
