Although the Oakland Raiders have showed signs of life in the past few weeks, the fact is, this is a team devoid of talent at nearly every position. With the NFL’s oldest roster, expect the Raiders to make some major changes this offseason in order to get a jump-start on what appears to be another rebuilding effort. With that said, here are five players the Raiders need to release this offseason.

In his prime, Maurice Jones-Drew was one of the best running backs in the NFL and a very fun player to watch, but at this point in his career, there’s no reason for him to be on a roster. He isn’t effective anymore, and the Raiders have a better option on the roster in Latavius Murray.

Despite a two-sack performance in the Raiders' Week 14 win, Antonio Smith has largely been a flop this season for Oakland. Smith’s best years are behind him, and the Raiders will save money by releasing him, rendering Smith expendable.

Yet another player signed by Oakland last offseason who is well past his prime, Justin Tuck is likely one-and-done in Oakland. He’s a great veteran leader, but at the end of the day the NFL is a production-based business, and Tuck hasn’t produced.

Although Taiwan Jones is an intriguing enough talent, his injury history, and the fact he hasn’t been a consistent producer in Oakland, puts his roster spot in jeopardy. Jones has yet to turn his raw athletic ability into production for the Raiders, and that might cost him his job.

It’s hard to watch Matt Schaub play, and at this point, it’s clear he’s done as an NFL quarterback. Once one of the NFL’s better starting quarterbacks, Schaub has regressed into one of the worst backups in the league. He’s finished in the NFL.
