The defense of the New York Giants has been pretty formidable in recent weeks. They allowed 25 points to the Jacksonville Jaguars, which was too many, but then allowed seven and 13 to the Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins. Over the course of those three weeks, they’ve averaged 279 yards of total defense, while racking up seven, eight and eight sacks. Leading the way is defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul with six.

If the Giants were to beat the Redskins, they were going to need much of the same from Pierre-Paul, and he stepped up. He recorded a season-high 2.5 sacks and six tackles, looking like vintage JPP. If the Giants would like to end their season on a four-game win streak, they’re going to need that.

The pressure Pierre-Paul was able to get from the outside opened up rush lanes up the middle. That allowed for Jonathan Hankins and Cullen Jenkins to each reach the quarterback with two and 0.5 sacks respectively. With Robert Griffin III looking nothing like what he used to be in 2012, the Giants were able to push him out of his comfort zone.

Although Griffin was able to extend some plays, JPP was able to track him down very well throughout the second half and was even able to force a fumble with an offensive lineman between them. In terms of the player who best lifted his team and led the way to the victory, Pierre-Paul is easily the clear choice.

This Sunday, the Giants will travel to face the St. Louis Rams, who have struggled along the offensive line this season. They’ve hung in their longer than most people would have expected, and despite a couple of backups seeing playing time, the Rams will be a tough team to beat on the road.

The Giants’ defensive line, and specifically Pierre-Paul, will need to continue to dominate if they want to come away with the win.
