As if the Chicago Bears‘ disappointing season couldn’t get any weirder, they have now benched starting quarterback Jay Cutler and will start Jimmy Clausen this week when the team takes on the Detroit Lions. This just shows how volatile the overall situation is in Chicago this season.

Perhaps trying to salvage his job, head coach Marc Trestman has made the call and will hope Clausen can lead them to victory over the last two games. However, the bigger story here is that Cutler may be done in Chicago. After several disappointing seasons in which Cutler continued to underachieve, the team may have finally had enough.

It’s just too bad for the Bears that they got sick of him less than a year after signing him to a seven-year deal that included $50 million in guaranteed money. Even though Cutler has six more years left on his deal after this season, the team can cut him after two more seasons without a cap penalty.

That could make it easier for Chicago to move their former starter in a potential trade. Surely, the team will explore options and they may find a few takers. Namely, the Tennessee Titans, who play in Nashville where Cutler played college ball at Vanderbilt, and the New York Jets also make sense as suitors.

Each of these two teams is in need of a quarterback and perhaps a change of scenery could benefit Cutler, who has all the talent in the world, but has never quite reached his potential.

Whether the Bears are able to move Cutler or not remains to be seen, but his benching may signal the end of his career as the Bears’ starting quarterback. The team will likely try even harder to move him this offseason and ensure that the underachieving signal caller’s days in the Windy City are over.
