The New York Giants and St. Louis Rams are set to face off in a matchup of eliminated teams. The Giants are riding a two-game win streak, while the Rams lost a low-scoring divisional game last week. The Giants’ defense has 23 sacks in their last three games; St. Louis has given up 12 points in their three most recent games -- actually, all 12 came in their last game. Here are five predictions for the game that should be a battle of the defenses.

Both teams are top-10 in the league in sacks – the Giants 4th with 41, and the Rams tied for 10th with 36. Their defensive lines have become their identity. On top of that, Eli Manning and Austin Davis have been sacked 27 and 29 times this year, respectively. When the defensive lines are that athletic, and the quarterbacks are immobile, strictly pocket passers, there are bound to be a few sacks for each side.

Jeff Fischer is known for his willingness to pull trick plays on special teams. In his 20-year career, Fischer has called 28 fake punts, while his opposite, Tom Coughlin, has yet to call one. Plus, the Rams have a huge weapon in Tavon Austin. The Giants never have great special teams, and it’s entirely plausible Austin breaks one or Fischer catches the Giants unaware and calls a game-changing play.

Since breaking out for 156 yards on eight catches against the Indianapolis Colts, Odell Beckham Jr. has been impossible to slow down. Since that game, he leads the NFL in receptions (61) and receiving yards (866). While the Rams' defense will put plenty of pressure on Eli Manning, he’ll have the confidence to put the ball up, knowing Beckham has the best chance to bring it in. The all-time record is nine games, and Beckham will be one closer.

Continuing the theme of dominant D-lines, no running back will hit the century mark. Neither the Giants nor the Rams have a top-notch running back but they both have players with the potential to surpass 100 yards. Knowing how potent the pass rush of each team is, they’ll certainly want to negate that by running the ball. And both teams will certainly have a high number of carries, but a low yards-per-carry, and, therefore, no one will reach 100.

As impressive as the Rams’ defense has been the last three weeks, they’ve faced two terrible offenses in the Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins, plus a second and third-string quarterback against the Arizona Cardinals. The Giants' offense has come around as of late, and they should be the difference-maker in the game. It should still be a low-scoring affair, however.
