Buffalo Bills Should Go All-In On Jay Cutler This Offseason

Is this not a no-brainer? Maybe it’s just a visceral reaction to the Chicago Bears‘ disappointment in the sad-faced assassin Jay Cutler. As you can see I’m already giving the guy a nickname, so it’s probably just an emotional response, but I think the Buffalo Bills‘ front office owe it to the team’s defense and long-suffering Buffalo fans to capitalize off of Chicago’s “buyers remorse” of Cutler.

He’s never been the best quarterback, and he certainly doesn’t deserve that $126 million contract he currently plays under, but Cutler is an above-average quarterback who, given the Bills’ defense on the other end of the spectrum, could do some solid damage next NFL season.

Right off the top of most fans’ heads, they can attribute many of the Bills’ losses this season to a lack of talent at the quarterback position when it was most needed. Just imagine if the Bills had Cutler in those matchups — they might have already had a foot in the playoffs rather than being on the outside looking in praying for the wheels to fall off for a few AFC North teams.

I know Cutler isn’t likable, but you know who was likable? Ryan Fitzpatrick, and where did that get the Bills? Cutler also doesn’t smile or ever really look that engaged in the game, but he has already thrown nine more touchdowns than both E.J. Manuel and Kyle Orton combined, a difference that means the world when a defense can make Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers, the class of the NFL at QB, have two of the worst games of their careers in back-to-back weeks.

Cutler has some sloppy mechanics and interception-throwing tendencies that will make any fan cringe, but if the Bills’ offense was actually able to pick up a few first downs, just imagine what this defense could do with some extra rest. Those interceptions wouldn’t be as big of a deal if Cutler could lead the offense to a consistent 21-plus points per game.

There are a few kinks that need to be worked out such as how much the Bills would have to give up for Cutler. Also, there would need to be some restructuring of his monster contract for the deal to even make sense. But just imagine the Bills bringing back rookie sensation Kiko Alonso on defense along with one more year of Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods, topped off with Jay Cutler running the show.

If that doesn’t break the Bills’ millennium-leaping playoff drought, then nothing will.
