The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a tough season on both sides of the ball. The organization brought in Josh McCown to lead the offense and thought they had enough weapons to help him be successful. On defense, the hiring of coach Lovie Smith, the addition of a couple of free agents, and a foundation of several young players with star potential had them thinking that they could have one of the top defenses in the league.

Unfortunately, not much has gone right for the team, and the Buccaneers will head into the offseason with a high draft pick and a glaring need at quarterback.

The offense does show potential with a couple of young running backs and a budding star at wide receiver in Mike Evans. The Bucs need to shore up the offensive line, but will likely target a quarterback with their first-round pick. Top quarterbacks have proven in the past that they can change the course of a franchise, and the Buccaneers greatly need a big-time player to lead their offense.

They must target Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston early on, as it might not be worth the risk to try and find a short-term solution again in free agency.

The defense was supposed to be a strong point this year, but has been able to produce on a regular basis. With Gerald McCoy and Lavonte David, the Buccaneers have two of the best young defenders in the league, who should only get better. They need to continue to improve their secondary and find players who fit the system, but they have the right foundation to build upon.

Even though there are plenty of holes on the Buccaneers’ roster, the most important one is currently at quarterback. It is one of the hardest positions to fill throughout the league, and they will have a tough decision should they find themselves with the top pick in the draft. However, if they are able to find a quality quarterback, then it can help change the course of the franchise as they do have the right building blocks in place to construct a better roster in the future.
