If you had told me going into today’s game that a blocked punt by Terrence Fede would have saved Joe Philbin’s job, I would have called you insane, but as it turns out, that is exactly what happened. Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross made it abundantly clear that Philbin will return as Miami’s head coach next year, leaving those of us who were sure that Philbin was on the way out scratching our heads and admitting that we were wrong.

Today’s game against the Minnesota Vikings was absolutely disturbing at times, and there was the feeling that Philbin wouldn’t make it through halftime with a job, let alone make it to another year. However, the Dolphins’ players rallied behind their head coach and came back with fire in the second half.

The Dolphins managed to surge back from an early deficit to take what seemed to be a relatively commanding eight point advantage in the fourth quarter, only to give up the lead and fall behind by a score in only a few seconds. It seemed once again that Miami was about to blow another game late and put the final nail in Philbin’s professional coffin. However, a strong touchdown drive, followed by a blocked punt by Fede that resulted in a safety with less than a minute remaining, turned the tide and saved Philbin’s tenure in Miami.

For a team, and coach, that has struggled to find a way to win in the closing minutes of the game, the blocked punt was a godsend. With one more win, Philbin will have increased his win total by a game each year, which is apparently enough to save his job even, though the team has yet to make the playoffs under his leadership.

Time will tell whether or not Fede’s blocked punt was the best thing that could have happened to the Dolphins or the worst, but for tonight, Philbin and co. can enjoy the win.
