Marquee free agent signings have become the norm for the St. Louis Rams during the Jeff Fisher/Les Snead era. The coach/GM combo signed Scott Wells, Cortland Finnegan and Kendall Langford in their inaugural year. Then came the Jake Long and Jared Cook additions before the duo inked Kenny Britt and Shaun Hill last offseason. The following five names are strong possibilities to wind up with the Rams in this year’s free agent class.

Still just 25 years of age with upside potential, Clint Boling has started 14 games in 2014. The Rams’ offensive line has allowed 2.9 sacks per game this season (24th), so an overhaul seems imminent. With Jake Long injury-prone on a big-money contract and likely to be cut, Greg Robinson will be the full-time left tackle next season, meaning a guard is needed to fill that void.

Another young player at just 25 with speed to burn, Buster Skrine is finally figuring out how to play in coverage instead of just outrunning opposing receivers. There’s no doubt he’s acquired some serious work ethic and technique tips from Joe Haden, and that knowledge could come in handy with the Rams. The youth in the St. Louis secondary could use a contemporary veteran who’s been around the league and gained valuable experience.

The theme continues with 25-year-old players who would be ideal fits for the Rams this offseason, as guard James Carpenter has really come into his own over the past two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. At 6-foot-5, 321 pounds, the former first-round pick is finally living up to his mauling potential inside at guard. His frame and blocking style would also lend itself to a move to the run-dominant side at right tackle if needed.

Jo-Lonn Dunbar isn’t cutting it as the third linebacker in the Rams’ stellar corps with Alec Ogletree and James Laurinaitis. An ideal replacement would be the 26-year-old Bruce Carter who has made serious strides in coverage this season. The super athletic linebacker certainly made an impression in the Cowboys’ game against Rams with a season-high 12 tackles, and he would be a great fit in St. Louis’ defensive scheme.

Still just 25 years of age, Torrey Smith has experienced a down year by his standards this season with the Baltimore Ravens. Similar to Hakeem Nicks a year ago, the interest could be limited in this burner deep threat due to that fact. He could bring the speed element that the Rams are lacking with Chris Givens falling out of favor in a more physically imposing package. An addition like this could really take the Rams’ offense to the next level.
