David Fales Should Start Over Jay Cutler in Week 17

Just when you thought Jay Cutler was out, the Chicago Bears reel him right back in.

Marc Trestman announced today that Cutler will start in place of Jimmy Clausen, who suffered a concussion in Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions and has been ruled out. The decision makes little to no sense for the Bears organization.

Rookie David Fales needs to start. There’s a good chance Fales is no different than almost any other sixth-round pick, that he will make little to no impact on the NFL landscape and will, at best, be a backup quarterback in the league for a few years. But thanks to Tom Brady, there’s always hope for a diamond in the rough. Brady, of course, was also a sixth-round pick, and has gone on to NFL superstardom.

The odds that Fales can even become a serviceable NFL quarterback are long, but with this season lost, the Bears need to know what they have in Fales.

This decision was made by Trestman. Unfortunately, Trestman only has his own interests in mind at this point. Trestman doesn’t care about what next season holds in Chicago, when he is almost certainly going to be shown the door. Trestman wants to try and win the game, salvage what’s left of this season, and restore any credibility he has left in the football world. Bears management needs to take these decisions away from Trestman and force their head coach to play Fales and look at the future of the team.

What’s the worst that could happen if Fales starts? Simple — he’s atrocious and the Bears are stomped by the Minnesota Vikings. That’s no worse than the countless other times this has happened with Cutler leading the offense. We know what this season is with Cutler — a lost one. This is a Week 17 matchup of two teams with no playoff aspirations. The Bears would not affect the integrity of the NFL playoff picture by playing Fales instead of Cutler.

Playing Fales is the only sensible decision for the organization to make. Keep in mind, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots made a move to try and sign Fales off the practice squad, and the Bears had to block the move. If Belichick thinks he might be worth a look, that’s enough for me to see if Fales has enough ability to come back in 2015 on the roster.

The Bears made the decision that Cutler’s season was finished, and Clausen’s concussion should not change their decision.
