Cleveland Browns Rumors: Rex Grossman Turned Down Team for Family

It’s been a rough second half of the 2014 season for the Cleveland Browns, a team that went from playoff contender back to NFL laughingstock in a matter of weeks. It’s gotten so bad that even Rex Grossman isn’t interested in playing for them.

With their top two quarterbacks Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer injured, the Browns called upon Grossman to see if the 11-year veteran was interested in serving as an emergency fill-in. He wasn’t interested, turning down the offer to spend time with his family during the holidays.

Grossman spent a portion of the 2014 preseason with the Browns, playing 15 snaps during their final game before falling victim to final cuts. During his brief preseason stint with Cleveland, he completed four of eight passes for 80 yards and an 85.4 passer rating.

However, throughout his career, Grossman has been nothing more than an average backup – and first-round bust.

While Grossman obviously has a good reason for turning down the Browns, it’s still sad nonetheless that they can’t even convince him to come quarterback for one week – which would net him at least $56,000. That just shows you how unappealing the Cleveland quarterback job has become.

The Browns will likely be forced to go with undrafted rookie Connor Shaw, who is technically still on the practice squad despite taking first-team reps on Monday. If that’s the case, the Baltimore Ravens’ defense will be salivating on Sunday.
