5 Teams That Should Hire Rex Ryan After His Inevitable Firing

5 Teams That Should Hire Rex Ryan After His Inevitable Firing

The writing is on the wall for the New York Jets head coach. He has reportedly cleaned out his office in anticipation that he will be fired after the Jets' season ends Sunday. Ryan was a great head coach for the Jets, taking them to multiple AFC Championship games, and was an even better defensive coordinator before that. These skills will make Ryan a hot commodity after he is fired and these five teams should make a strong push to hire him.

The Raiders may be the only head coaching job that Ryan has a chance to land. Oakland is looking to make a home run hire and is reportedly pursuing Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh, however, is likely to become the head coach at the University of Michigan so the Raiders will need a backup plan. Ryan is no Harbaugh, but has the accolades of a home run hire and has a bold, player friendly personality that could fit in perfectly with the Raiders.

The Saints were officially eliminated from the playoffs last week and are now looking towards the offseason. The defense left a lot to be desired this season and that has led to rumors that the Saints will fire Rob Ryan at some point. Rex runs a similar system defensively to that of his brother Rob, so if the Saints did decide to part ways with him, Rex could be a logical replacement if he doesn't have a problem taking over for his brother.

The Giants have been slowly declining as a defense the past few seasons. They were one of the most feared defenses in football during their Super Bowl runs, but now they are full of question marks and untapped potential. The defense seems to need a jolt of life and new blood to make it strong again. Ryan has said how much he loves the New York area and media and could prefer to stay in the city and provide that jolt the Giants need.

Ryan could be an excellent fit for the Bears on a variety of fronts. The team is expected to clean house on the whole coaching staff and that could make Ryan a fit as head coach or defensive coordinator. The Bears are likely to hire an offensive guru to get their offense clicking but the defense is one of the worst in the league. Hiring Ryan in some capacity would make the Bears' defense one of the most feared in the NFL once again.

Seattle would be the best place for Ryan to land. There is no fit for him right now, but defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is expected to become a head coach. If Quinn leaves, the Seahawks could turn to Ryan. He has the energetic, player friendly attitude similar to Pete Carroll and runs a similar defensive scheme to that already in Seattle. If the Seahawks add Ryan, they will be the most feared team in the league and top Super Bowl contenders.
