The New York Giants have had a down season in 2014. Although they are eliminated from playoff contention, they have an opportunity to close the season on a high note with a four-game win streak. Going into the offseason, the Giants’ front office need to key in on one thing: Locking up star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.

Pierre-Paul has come a mighty long way since being drafted by the Giants in 2010, and has emerged into the NFL‘s premier pass rushers. He is currently approaching free agency , reaching the end of his five-year rookie contract worth $20 million. The difference between now and 2010 is that Pierre-Paul inked a multimillion dollar contract before even proving himself in the league. Now, he is one of the fiercest defensive players in the league and even helped propel the Giants to a Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XLVI.

The Giants would be absolutely insane not to make an legitimate effort to retaining Pierre-Paul. The challenge is that the Giants have exceeded their cap space for 2014 and would need serious roster modifications in the offseason in order to accommodate his desire for an extension.

I’m pretty sure he loves the organization as well as playing in the Big Apple, but as Jason puts it, “It’s a business decision.” If Giants GM Jerry Reese and organization are unable or unwilling to pay the big bucks to keep Pierre-Paul in New York, there will be several other suitors who would be more than willing to.

It will be interesting to see if and when Pierre-Paul tests the waters in free agency, but if the Giants are smart, they won’t let him wade too far.
