Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross Needs To Reevaluate Coach Joe Philbin

Coming into their week 17 matchup against the New York Jets, the Miami Dolphins had nothing to play for besides pride. However, any type of pride they had left Sun Life Stadium in the fourth quarter as the Dolphins fell to the Jets 24-37.

Last week after Miami beat the Minnesota Vikings after a late punt block that went for a safety, owner Stephen Ross stated to the media that head coach Joe Philbin would be returning for the 2015 season mainly due to the progression quarterback Ryan Tannehill has shown in his third year in the league. While that’s understandable, you can’t exactly give the credit to Philbin more than you can give it to first-year offensive coordinator Bill Lazor.

Ross gave Philbin a benchmark of progressing the team in 2014, and he has failed to do so. Like in 2013, the 2014 season has ended with an 8-8 record and only the offense showing significant progression. The head coach’s responsibility is to improve the whole team, not just the quarterback. Like I stated in the previous paragraph, credit for Tannehill’s improvement needs to go to Lazor opposed to Philbin.

Now if Philbin was to be let go the likelihood of Lazor not coming back next year would be high. Lazor needs to be running the offense next year for the Dolphins to make a step forward. In oder for that step to be made, though, Philbin can’t be the man leading the team.

Facts are facts, and the fact is that the Dolphins finished the season average once again. Philbin has lost to a 4-12 team that is on the verge of cleaning house because, simply put, they’re not very good. What does that say about a Miami team that hasn’t finished over .500 since 2008 when they made the playoffs.

Ross needs to make a move and bring in a leader that’ll return this once proud franchise to prominence.
