New York Giants Shouldn’t Use Franchise Tag On Jason Pierre-Paul

Jason Pierre-Paul Should Not Get New York Giants Franchise Tag

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Although many New York Giants fans would love to see Jason Pierre-Paul stick around for years to come, I don’t think that the Giants are willing to pay him what he thinks he is worth. This season was a pretty strong season for Pierre-Paul with 12.5 sacks and three forced fumbles, but the last couple of years have not been so strong. In 2013, he only had two sacks in 11 games, and the year prior only 6.5. His best season of his career was the 2011 season with 16.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. With that being said, I don’t think that the Giants will be using the franchise tag on him this season.

The Giants historically use the franchise tag to allow more time for negotiations, but Pierre-Paul has made it quite clear that he is looking for big money. With the top paid defensive end, Mario Williams of the Buffalo Bills, making $16 million a year, Pierre-Paul will most likely want a double-digit pay rate, but the Giants just can’t afford that big of a commitment — especially because Pierre-Paul hasn’t shown that he is capable of putting up the numbers since the Giants’ Super Bowl XLVI win.

I feel like instead of using the franchise tag on Pierre-Paul and making him a contract offer that he would most likely turn down, the Giants should use the tag for someone who has proven that he is worth a big deal, like safety Antrel Rolle or linebacker Mark Herzlich, who have proven that they are capable of putting up the numbers. Rolle didn’t have his best season this year, but in years past, he has shown that he has the potential to be a Pro-Bowl safety. Herzlich had his best season of his career with 52 tackles and one sack, which isn’t bad for someone who no one really had faith in.

I think that if the Giants really want to see another championship in the near future, they should be more focused on getting their offensive line assembled. The Giants have defensive players who have great potential; unfortunately, defensive coordinator Perry Fewell is where they should have made their changes.
