The Kansas City Chiefs cheaped out on the offensive line before the 2014 season and paid for it. The team had some tough salary cap issues to deal with, but more definitely could’ve been done. Two sixth-round draft picks and free agent Jeff Linkenbach was nothing close to enough to fill the void left by free agent losses Branden Albert, Geoff Schwartz and Jon Asamoah.
This offseason, there should be a nice chunk of change to sign some free agents after a few cuts. The offensive line needs to be addressed aggressively. Green Bay Packers RT Bryan Bulaga may cost a few pennies, but he’d be a great fit in Kansas City.
The Packers have some cap space to play with, and Bulaga is going to be one their top priorities. The Chiefs will have to fork over some serious money to outbid Green Bay. The 10 highest paid offensive linemen in 2014 were in a cap hit range of about $8.6 to $12.3 million. Bulaga isn’t quite among the top 10, but as we’ve seen in the current MLB offseason, you never know what the market is going to do.
Plus, he’s arguably the best free-agent tackle available. The torn ACL that kept him out for the 2013 season didn’t seem to slow him down in 2014, so an injury discount should not be expected.
Kansas City would have to pay big, which doesn’t seem to be GM John Dorsey‘s or coach Andy Reid’s approach for the offensive line. That may change, considering how badly it burned the Chiefs in 2014. If the front office decides gambling along the offensive line isn’t the way, Bulaga could cost a multi-year contract with an annual salary somewhere in the $7-11 million range.
If Kansas City can snag him for something toward the bottom of that estimate, there’s a chance he could be a Chief in 2015. The top of that range probably isn’t going to happen with all of the other holes the Chiefs have to fill.
