Dallas Cowboys Won Because They Stuck To The Process

Ever since Jason Garrett became head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, fans have had to listen to him talk about the word “process.” During Garrett’s first three seasons, Dallas finished 8-8, 8-8 and 8-8. Dallas fans were sick of hearing about the process and wanted to see some progress.

In 2014, the fans finally saw the progress they’d been waiting for as Dallas finished the regular season 12-4. Despite winning the NFC East, some people were still skeptical that the same old Cowboys would show up in the playoffs, and when the Detroit Lions got out to a 14-0 lead, it looked as if the doubters were going to be right. Just when it looked like the Cowboys would crumble once again under the pressure, they didn’t. The Dallas Cowboys didn’t lie down, they kept fighting and in the end they defeated the Detroit Lions, 24-20.

So what was the difference this time around? Why were the Cowboys able to come back when things looked so bleak? The answer is they stuck to the process. You see while fans rolled their eyes and got sick of hearing Jason Garrett talk about the process, his team embraced it. The Dallas Cowboys haven’t just embraced Garrett’s motto of sticking to the process, they’ve also embraced Jason Garrett as their coach. They have taken on the persona of their coach and when their backs were up against the wall, the Dallas Cowboys didn’t give in, they just stuck to the process.

Terrance Williams scored two touchdowns on Sunday; both came one play after he had been called for a penalty. That’s sticking to the process. Rookie Demarcus Lawrence made a mistake that could have cost Dallas the game, but he came back a few plays later and made the game-clinching play. That’s sticking to the process.

I don’t know how many more games Dallas will win this season. Maybe Sunday was their last for 2014. What I do know is this team believes in their coach and his message. I do know that you can never count them out of a game and whether they win or they lose, one thing is for sure — they will stick to the process.
