Despite the talk over the past few days about the controversial non-call in Dallas on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys deserved to defeat the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs. The Cowboys capitalized on the Lions’ mistakes and put together a rally to compensate for a rough first half. The reason for the Cowboys’ comeback had a lot to do with Tony Romo‘s patience as a quarterback.

In past years, Romo’s desire to win would get in the way of his ability to make big decisions. He would often try to win the game in one play and put the ball in places he’s just not capable of doing. This is the growing process of being an NFL quarterback. Most of the time you have to lose before you can win. Calling Romo a choke artist isn’t really a fair label. His most infamous play came on a botched snap that then head coach Bill Parcells admitted he shouldn’t have even been in for.

As Romo’s grown, the Cowboys have developed around him. Their offensive line is the best in football, and they’re led by athletes like Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray. But while the Cowboys’ offense is undoubtedly complete, they have a very tough challenge against the Green Bay Packers. The defense of the Packers is known to be weak, but since the Pack have moved linebacker Clay Matthews back inside they have looked much improved. If the Cowboys have any hope of winning at the historic Lambeau Field, they simply must get their points against a defense that’s clicking as of late.

The desire for points is even higher than usual when you’re trying to slow down Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. With an extra week of rest, Rodgers will be ready to flourish as he’s done consistently all season. He had a couple of minor hiccups late in the regular season, but ended it in MVP fashion by clinching home-field advantage while fighting through a hurting calf. Rodgers at this moment in time is undeniably playing quarterback at the highest level in the league.

It’s hard to bet against the best quarterback in football, but the Cowboys’ completeness as a unit could make this a game for the ages. The fans at Lambeau, some of the best fans American sports has to offer, will be there in full throat no matter what the forecast. One can only hope that the weather is unpleasant enough for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to remain off the sidelines throughout the game.

Home-field advantage gives the Packers the slight edge, but anything can happen in this game. Romo is playing better than he’s ever played, and both defenses are roughly around the same level. The Cowboys’ defense gives up roughly nine more yards per game on average. In other words, fasten your seat belts, because this could be a showdown for the ages. A matchup this tight suggests only one thing for pick’em leagues: Either go with the home dog or the better quarterback. In this case, the Packers have both.
