The Miami Dolphins once again were unable to make the playoffs, and some big changes need to be made if the team is to take that next step. These five changes would be a great start.

It was all too apparent at the end of the season that the once strong Dolphins’ defense couldn’t stop the run. A big time defensive tackle would be a key addition to make sure that Miami doesn’t crumble down the stretch again.

Branden Albert and Ja’Wuan James are both solid pieces, and when healthy, Mike Pouncey is one of the better interior linemen in the league. However, as soon as one piece goes down, the Dolphins are in trouble. The reality is, without another strong guard on the squad, Miami is doomed to repeat the revolving door of starters we have seen the last few years.

Trading away your best defensive player may seem counterintuitive, but trading Cameron Wake may be the best thing for long-term success. Wake is on the wrong side of 30, and even though he is a physical freak, the decline in production is inevitable. If the Dolphins can get solid value for him, it may be time to part ways.

Dannell Ellerbe is thankfully on his way out, but Philip Wheeler’s contract almost certainly ties him to the team for at least another season. Jelani Jenkins has shown promise, and if Dion Jordan can develop into a strong side linebacker, there is hope for this team. Still, Miami needs to address this glaring need in free agency and the draft.
